Finally. After 5 decades of military rule, democracy is finally within reach. The current government that is being headed by Aung San Suu Kyi is having troubles reviving a sluggish economy and shake off the vestiges of a still powerful armed force.
Placed into power by optimism and hatred towards the generals who ruled the country for 50 years, the people of this country is trying to bring democracy into their nation with Aung San Suu Kyi's political party, The National League for Democracy (NLD). The current government vows to boost prosperity and end decades of civil war. Ultimately bringing peace to the region.
Expectations of what the NLD could achieve within a year is extremely high. According to Myanmar watchers. But many are still wondering whether the new government will ever be able to finally reunite the long divided nation.
"There is a growing sense among the politically engaged electorate that the government is not meeting their expectations." said political analyst Richard Horsey, a consultant for the International Crisis Group. "Partly, because those expectations were inevitably far too high... but partly it is due to government incompetence."
Most MPs have little or no political experience and spent most of their time languishing in jail under the former junta that gorged itself and its cronies on Myanmar's resources and brutally suppressed dissents.
